The “Moonshot Compensation Award: Is Your Board Vulnerable to the Ask?

April 30, 2024 | 5:30 p.m.– 8:30 p.m. ET
The Lenox Hotel, 61 Exeter Street, Boston, MA 02116

Executive compensation has been in the news with Elon Musk becoming the poster child for sky high CEO pay.  How do boards balance the increasingly expensive demands for rewarding executive talent with performance and governance expectations?

Not surprisingly, executive compensation has been steadily increasing over the last 20 years, and Elon Musk, while extreme, is not alone in making outrageous demands for his compensation as CEO.  Despite these demands, Boards are required to balance business priorities and resultant talent needs with the more conservative expectations of shareholders and governance groups. This challenge is even greater in the volatile economy of the last several years, where aligning pay and performance is difficult to do for many industries.

In this highly interactive session, Cory Morrow, a partner from Korn Ferry’s executive pay practice, will lead a discussion of the drivers of increasing CEO compensation expectations and demands, examples of why boards respond the way they do, and how boards can navigate these challenges in the future. This session will be moderated by Elaine Eisenman, Chair of the Compensation Committee of DBI, Inc. and co-chair of our chapter. Elaine is also the Chair of the Board for the Private Directors Association.

Cory Morrow is a Senior Client Partner in Korn Ferry’s executive compensation practice.  He has over 20 years of experience as an advisor to both compensation committees and management on a wide range of issues in the field of executive compensation. Prior to joining Korn Ferry, Cory was a partner at Hay Group. Cory received a master of business administration in finance and organizational behavior from SMU’s Cox School of Business and a bachelor’s degree (magna cum laude) in Spanish literature from Pomona College.  He is also a Certified Executive Compensation Professional (CECP).
